Nigeria is the most populous nation of black people in the world, and most populous country in Africa with over 180 million people. Stroke is the most common medical emergency in most tertiary hospitals, the number one non - communicable cause of death and the leading cause of neurological admission (up to 80%) in Nigeria. Every minute, one Nigerian and up to six Africans develop a stroke.
The Nigeria Stroke Society (NSS) was inaugurated on 24th September 2009 at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu,Ogun State, Nigeria. It as a platform to rally neurologists and other neuroscience – related health professionals with a goal of improving stroke research, prevention, acute care and rehabilitation of stroke patients in Nigeria.
The name was changed to Nigerian Stroke Organization (NSO) in 2017 to accommodate growth and a broader spectrum of participation from a multidisciplinary array of stroke neurologists and allied professionals involved in stroke care and research.

To encourage multidisciplinary scientific research on stroke in order to generate evidence – base for interventions to reduce the burden of stroke in Nigeria.
To promote capacity building, knowledge exchange as well as technical cooperation for improving stroke preventive, therapeutic and rehabilitative services in Nigeria.
To promote stroke awareness and advocacy for stroke survivors and their families/caregivers.
To conduct conferences, refresher courses, workshops, lectures, seminars, demonstrations and exhibitions related to stroke research, services, capacity building and advocacy in Nigeria.
To promote the formulation of stroke - friendly policies across multiple levels of policy making in Nigeria.
